Forklift Training General Overview
Most people may not realize that forklifts have been around since the 1920’s. Of course, they didn’t look like the ones that you see these days, but they filled a much needed gap in the manufacturing industry when it came to loading, unloading, and moving large amounts of inventory to save time and money.
Today’s forklift has been redesigned to meet specific standards depending on the weight, height, and type of load they are going to be lifting, not to mention the type of fuel they can run. You can definitely see how they have evolved over the years, and how much time and money they have saved numerous companies.
Forklifts are rated according to the job they are to perform. The most common type of forklift can carry an average weight of 2000 to 4000 pounds and lift to a height of between 12 and 14 feet. This is exceptional when you think about how long it would take a person to move this type of load by hand and how much the company would have to pay someone to do this type of work. With a forklift, these types of jobs can be done fairly quickly and there is no need to hire the extra personnel to maintain a working warehouse.
In order to work for a company that utilizes forklifts in their warehouse, you will need to be certified as an operator. Most companies follow a certification standard that is overseen by OSHA and is taught on the job, but there are training facilities available that you can go to in order to be certified before you are hired.
By getting your certification on your own, you are showing prospective employers that you are willing to go that extra mile to be hired as a useful employee with skills they need. You should be aware that there are numerous attachments available for forklifts, and you may need to be certified for these different attachments as well as being certified for the particular forklift they attach to.
While forklifts may not seem like an overly complicated piece of equipment, you are still going to need to be certified in order to operate one on the job. The Federal Government put regulations in place so that companies would have to make sure that their operators were knowledgeable about the equipment they are using and the safety standards that the operator will have to follow. Because of this, no company is allowed to have uncertified operators on their forklifts, and training must be given to anyone that is not certified.
Most companies will have a training program that you can attend in order to become certified. The training course will usually consist of a few training videos, and exam of some sort, as well as the hands on aspect of using a forklift safely. You will have to be given this training by a skilled operator that is certified to train new employees and that can evaluate your training and the techniques that you will be using while you are working. Of course, this is by no means the only way that you can get training to operate a forklift as there are plenty of courses that you can take.
There are private training companies out there that you can sign up for that will give you all the safety requirements and general knowledge of forklifts that you will need to become certified.
These courses will give you the basics of a multiple selection of forklifts and teach you how to operate them in a safe manner while allowing you to use any one of these lifts on the job. The good thing about this is that you can go out and become certified before being hired, which allows you to get a step up on any new employees that might have applications in that aren’t trained yet.
You may also be able to find OSHA certified online courses that will walk you through the information that you will need to know about operating a forklift, except for the actual hands on aspect.
